Security Concerns Drive the Decision
The move to strengthen the New Air Force One jet‘s defensive capabilities follows mounting questions about its protective features. Since its first operational flight on July 1, when Trump traveled to North Dakota, the aircraft has drawn attention for potential gaps in its anti-missile systems when compared to the previous Air Force One model.
ABC News reported that the Secret Service had previously recommended the president utilize the older aircraft as a precaution during his departure from the NATO summit in Turkey. This guidance stemmed from perceived security disparities between the two jets. The New York Times had noted that the newer aircraft was missing certain anti-missile defense systems present in its predecessor.
“Well, it has, it has a lot, and you know it has a lot of capability, but as I understand it, in about a month or so, they’re going to send it to have it be maxed out,” the president explained regarding the jet’s capabilities.
“So they’re going to be sending it, and they’ll have it be maxed out,” Trump added during his remarks to reporters.
Direct Questions from Reporters
Trump’s statements addressed specific concerns raised by journalists covering the story. ABC News clarified that it had not independently confirmed all claims regarding the missing defense systems on the New Air Force One jet.
“Mr. President, this plane does not have antimissile defense systems on it,” the reporter stated. “Why are you flying on it?”
In his response, Trump confirmed that the “maxing out” process would require approximately one month to complete, though he did not provide a precise start date for the modifications to begin.
A Remarkable Foreign Gift
The luxury aircraft, valued at approximately $400 million, marks an extraordinary donation from the Qatari royal family. This generous contribution sparked conversations among lawmakers and ethics specialists about its broader implications for presidential gifts.
“Frankly, we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary,” Trump remarked on July 1. “They spent top dollar.”
The president also recounted his discussion with Boeing regarding the aircraft selection. “I said to Boeing, ‘What’s the best one?’ They said this is the best plane ever built, and you’re going to have the privilege of flying it, and I have a privilege also of flying it,” Trump recalled.
Retrofitting Timeline and Ownership
The U.S. Air Force has been implementing modifications to the Texas-based jet since September, addressing security protocols, communications infrastructure, and transportation needs for presidential operations. Initial projections from last year indicated the retrofit would cost under $400 million, though the ultimate expenditure has not been finalized.
Several technical details of the ongoing upgrades remain classified. According to sources with knowledge of the arrangement, the gifted aircraft will function as the primary New Air Force One jet until shortly before Trump’s term ends. Following this period, ownership will transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
