Who is Markwayne Mullin, Trump’s new pick for Homeland Security secretary?
A Fiercely Conservative Figure
Donald Trump, the current US president, has named Oklahoma’s Senator Markwayne Mullin as his next Homeland Security Secretary. This appointment replaces the agency’s previous leader, Kristi Noem, who had faced significant political scrutiny. Mullin, a first-term senator, has been a consistent backer of Trump’s initiatives since entering Congress.
Policy Stance and Agency Challenges
Mullin is known for his outspoken nature and will serve as the second Homeland Security chief in Trump’s second term. He has publicly endorsed the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to detain undocumented immigrants, a policy central to the Trump administration. However, his confirmation by the Senate remains pending.
“Yes, I’m a Republican, yes I’m conservative,” Mullin stated outside the Capitol after learning of his nomination. “Once I make that transition, my focus is to keep the homeland secure. That’s going to be my focus, and we’re super excited about this opportunity.”
Mullin has also expressed support for the ongoing partial government shutdown, which has disrupted funding for the DHS. He criticized Democrats for using the shutdown as a political tactic, despite acknowledging its limited impact on immigration enforcement. “They’re not stopping ICE from doing their job,” he remarked in a recent interview with CNN.
Controversial Senate Moments
One of Mullin’s most memorable moments in the Senate occurred during a hearing in November 2023. He challenged Sean O’Brien, a union leader, to a confrontation, calling him out for a social media comment that mocked Mullin’s business background. The exchange escalated when Mullin suggested a physical showdown, prompting a scolding from a committee member.
Months prior, O’Brien had mocked Mullin on social media, labeling him a “greedy CEO who pretends like he’s self-made.” Mullin later proposed an MMA fight as a way to settle the dispute, offering a date in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The encounter highlights his tendency to express views boldly, even in public settings.
From Business to Public Service
Before his political career, Mullin and his wife built a successful family plumbing business over two decades. His transition to public office began in 2023, when he was sworn in as a US senator. He has since focused on advancing policies aligned with his conservative principles, including immigration enforcement.
