“The Department of Attorney General has opened an investigation into this malicious act not only to look into the potential unlawful conduct but also to mitigate the risk that this act could trigger copy-cat acts against other well-known residents and elected officials as the newest form of threat or intimidation,” a spokesperson for the Michigan attorney general’s office wrote in a statement.

Buttigieg, who currently holds the distinction of being one of the most recognizable faces in the Democratic Party, has been increasingly discussed as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028. His visibility in national politics makes him an attractive target for those wishing to send a message through high-profile incidents.

The Incident Unfolds in Traverse City

The troubling episode took place at Buttigieg’s residence in Traverse City, Michigan. In a blog post published on July 1, the former cabinet member described how authorities arrived at his home based on allegations that turned out to be entirely fabricated. He characterized the timing and nature of the reports as appearing to be politically motivated.

During his subsequent interview with police, Buttigieg learned that an individual who claimed to have encountered him at a conference had reported that Buttigieg had allegedly confessed to “committed unspeakable violent crimes.” This alarming claim, according to the caller, meant that Buttigieg’s children were supposedly in danger.

The consequences were immediate and distressing for the family. Buttigieg reported being informed that he could not remain unsupervised with his four-year-old twins until law enforcement completed their interviews with the children in the absence of any family members.

Authorities Confirm the Report Was False

Michigan State Police subsequently verified that the anonymous tip was indeed baseless. The Attorney General’s office echoed this conclusion in their Monday statement, noting that the allegations were fundamentally flawed from the outset.

“Common sense would have shown that this targeted report plainly lacked credibility on its face,” the office stated in their official communication.

The legal office further emphasized that proper procedures should have been followed before separating children from their parents. They outlined specific standards that ought to guide such decisions in the future.

“Before children are separated from their families, due diligence should be exercised to ensure some nexus exists between the source and the family, or that the complaint comes from a reputable, reliable, or verifiable source,” the office wrote.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s office indicated that the actions taken could constitute a potential felony violation under Michigan law, an offense they described as being taken very seriously by state authorities.

A spokesperson for Buttigieg expressed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the family. “This has been a painful and infuriating situation for the family,” the spokesperson said on Monday. “They are in touch with Michigan authorities, seeking answers and accountability for what happened.”

In a recent interview with “Good Morning America,” Buttigieg shared his perspective on moving forward. He emphasized the importance of preventing politics from becoming increasingly hostile and divisive.

“To me, the most important thing going forward is we just cannot allow our politics to keep moving in this direction,” he said. “This can’t be treated as something that it’s just something you accept, something you take on when you choose to go into public service.”
