Mother speaks out after son fell to his death in high-rise railing incident

Mother Speaks Out After Son’s Fatal Fall from High-Rise Railing

Fiona Garrett, the mother of 23-year-old Joshua Robbins, has expressed her anguish after her son died when a communal railing collapsed beneath him. The incident, which occurred in London, highlights a potential safety hazard that could have affected anyone.

Tragic Incident in Newton Street

Joshua fell from the communal area outside his father’s apartment on Newton Street after checking if a delivered pizza was ready. Police were alerted to the scene in Holborn just before 8:30 p.m. on 29 January, but efforts to save him proved futile.

“Joshua literally leaned on the railing by the lift, putting his head out to see if the pizza had arrived. He was giving instructions when the railing gave way, and he plunged five floors to his death,” Garrett explained.

Garrett described the event as a “catastrophic incident that should never have happened, completely preventable.” She noted her husband was “deeply traumatised” and grappling with “survivor’s guilt.”

Family Campaign for Safer High-Rises

In response, Garrett’s family launched “No More Falls,” a campaign advocating for mandatory safety regulations in high-rise buildings with similar railings or balconies. “Joshua’s death has to mean something—he can’t just disappear without reason,” she emphasized.

Garrett also shared that the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, had responded to her inquiry about the incident. “His reply didn’t feel like a generic note; it seemed personal and genuine,” she said, though she stressed she needed “actual action,” not just empty reassurances.

Authorities’ Response and Ongoing Inquiry

Pippa Fleetwood-Read, CEO of the Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the building, stated: “Joshua’s tragic death has deeply affected everyone who knew him. We offer our sincere condolences and are working to support residents, including counseling and regular updates.”

“We’re not able to comment further while the police investigation is ongoing,” Fleetwood-Read added.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the inquiry is in its early stages, with experts like a forensic structural engineer involved. “These enquiries can take time due to the complexity of the case,” they said, noting the coroner’s report will follow the investigation.

Joshua’s family continues to be kept informed and supported by specialists, while requesting privacy during this emotional period. The incident has sparked calls for stricter safety measures in high-rise structures, as Garrett insists the tragedy must not be forgotten.
