Six Dead After Man ‘Sets Himself On Fire’ During Bus Journey

At least six individuals lost their lives and three others were hospitalized with critical injuries following a tragic incident on a regional transport bus. The event unfolded in Kerzers, a town located approximately 15 miles west of Bern, the Swiss capital.

A police representative, Frederic Papaux, hinted that the disaster may have stemmed from a “voluntary act,” though the exact cause remains under investigation. The bus, operated by PostBus, was en route from Düdingen to Kerzers when it caught fire before reaching its final destination.

Witness Report and Emergency Response

A witness recounted the event to local Albanian-language media, stating: ‘A man ignited himself inside. He poured gasoline and set himself ablaze!’

Upon arrival, rescue personnel found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Ambulance and helicopter crews transported three critically injured individuals to the hospital, while two others received treatment at the scene.

President’s Statement

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his sorrow on X, noting: ‘It distresses and saddens me that yet more people in Switzerland have lost their lives in a serious fire. The background is being clarified. I extend my condolences to the families of those from Kerzers and think of the injured and emergency services.’

Previous Fire at Ski Resort

Earlier in the year, a similar tragedy occurred at the Constellation, a nightclub in Crans-Montana’s ski resort. On New Year’s Eve, 41 people died in the blaze, with 115 others suffering severe burns. The bar owners now face charges related to manslaughter by negligence, injury through neglect, and arson by fault.

At the time of the incident, around 200 individuals, including children, were inside the venue. Witnesses claimed the fire started when a waitress placed candles atop champagne bottles, one of which was leaned against a wooden ceiling.

Crans-Montana, a favored spot among British skiers, is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. The establishment, known as Le Constellation, has been open since 2015 and can accommodate up to 300 people in its main area, with an additional 40 in the lounge.
