EastEnders baby emergency as in-agony Nicola is rushed to hospital

Next week’s EastEnders episode promises dramatic tension as pregnant Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) faces a sudden medical crisis. The club owner, who is expecting her first child with former Queen Vic landlord George Knight (Colin Salmon), is taken to the hospital after experiencing intense contractions.

Amid the chaos, Nicola’s relationship with Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) takes a turn for the worse. The conflict escalates when she discovers that Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) might be the biological father of Penny’s unborn child, rather than Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota). Confronted with this revelation, Nicola demands Penny take a DNA test, threatening to reveal the secret if she refuses.

While preparing for George’s new restaurant launch, Harry notices Nicola’s unease. She confides in him about not feeling the baby move, but insists she doesn’t want to worry George. After being hospitalized, tests confirm the infant is healthy, yet Nicola returns to the Square with renewed agitation, clashing with Penny once more before the pain resumes.

Despite Harry’s urging to return to the hospital, Nicola hides her condition from George, choosing to go home for rest. ‘Nicola is used to handling things alone and doesn’t want to add stress to George,’ explains Laura Doddington, who portrays the character. ‘She’s convinced her issues might not be serious, especially after false labor episodes with both Harry and Barney. Part of her still thinks this could be another false alarm.’

As the restaurant event unfolds, George grows anxious when Harry expresses concerns about Nicola’s absence. Unbeknownst to them, Nicola is already in labor back at No.1, writhing in pain as George and Harry arrive to check on her. The situation spirals when she is taken to hospital for an emergency caesarean, facing complications that threaten her recovery.

Following the birth of a daughter named Ivy, Nicola must stay isolated from her newborn due to an infection, leaving her heartbroken. ‘This week, the emotional strain and her inability to see her baby leave her vulnerable,’ says Doddington. ‘It contrasts sharply with her usual strong, protective demeanor. The situation becomes deeply heartbreaking, especially when others can hold the baby while she remains apart.’

Cast and Characters

Nicola’s relationship with Harry and Penny is central to the plot. George Knight’s role as the new father adds to the emotional stakes, with the couple’s dynamic tested by the baby’s arrival and subsequent challenges.

‘The story highlights Nicola’s resilience and the weight of her responsibilities,’ Doddington adds. ‘She’s determined to manage everything, but the unexpected complications reveal her fragility.’

EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday, 30th March at 7.30pm on BBC One or stream first from 6am on iPlayer. For more details, explore our latest spoilers and updates on the show’s upcoming storyline.
