Trump Endorses Ex-UK Political Aide Steve Hilton for California Governor
Donald Trump, the US president, has thrown his support behind Steve Hilton, a former senior advisor to former British Prime Minister David Cameron, in the race for California’s governor. The endorsement adds a new twist to a contest already known for its unpredictability, as the state remains overwhelmingly Democratic. In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Hilton, stating he would “be a great governor.”
The president criticized Democrats for their governance, claiming they had “done an absolutely horrendous job” in California. He noted that “people are fleeing” the state, hinting at dissatisfaction with current policies. Hilton, who now resides in California, is one of 10 candidates competing in the June 2 primary. The top two vote-getters, regardless of political affiliation, will advance to the general election.
Hilton’s political journey began with Cameron’s government from 2010 to 2012, but he later distanced himself from the Conservative leader’s immigration stance. He transitioned to media, hosting a Fox News program for years and remaining active with the conservative network. His campaign for governor focuses on reducing taxes, trimming the state budget, and lowering costs for families through housing reforms.
California’s political landscape has been dominated by Democrats for decades, yet this race presents a rare opportunity for Republicans. The state’s “jungle primary” system, where voters choose between multiple candidates without party labels, has created a fractured Democratic field. A March poll by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies surprised many, showing Hilton and Republican rival Chad Bianco outpacing Democratic contenders.
“Deeply honored” to receive Trump’s backing, Hilton expressed gratitude on X. However, the president’s endorsement may complicate his path if he faces a Democratic opponent in November. The poll also revealed that Democratic candidates like Congressman Eric Swalwell, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire environmental advocate Tom Steyer had significant support among eight contenders. State Democrats reacted with concern, prompting officials to urge some candidates to withdraw.
With Republicans struggling to win statewide races in California for 20 years, Trump’s involvement could shift momentum. Yet, the challenge lies in whether Hilton’s campaign can overcome the state’s liberal leanings and unify the GOP vote. The outcome of the primary will determine the November showdown, where Democrats hope to maintain their stronghold.
