FCDO Offers Support to Orla’s Family
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office expressed solidarity with Orla’s loved ones, acknowledging the family’s sorrow following her fatal incident in Vietnam. The office confirmed ongoing contact with local authorities and its commitment to supporting the family during this challenging period.
“Orla was beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit. She loved to look good and lived life to the full,” her mother, Henrietta Wates, told Viet Nam News. The mother added: “We chose to donate Orla’s organs, as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted. Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort.”
Orla’s Journey and Legacy
According to Viet Nam News, Orla had been exploring Southeast Asia before enrolling at Durham University. Her father, Andrew Wates, shared that his daughter cherished Vietnam, making the organ donation a meaningful act for the family. The hospital representative noted: “In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race—donating her organs, giving others a chance at life… One journey has come to an end, but her life continues quietly and resiliently in others who have been granted a second chance.”
Ha Giang Loop and Road Safety Concerns
The Ha Giang Loop, a 350km (217 miles) mountainous route in northern Vietnam, is a popular adventure destination. Tour operators often recommend riding with a local guide, especially for those less experienced. Vietnam’s roads are frequently cited as hazardous, with over 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries recorded in traffic accidents alone in 2024.
