The Scale of the August 10 Quake

The earthquake struck on August 10 with a magnitude of 7.4, its epicenter located within Chocó itself. Official tallies place the death toll at no fewer than 287, while the government lists 194 people as missing. Independent civilian databases, however, track more than 4,100 individuals whose whereabouts remain unknown, a gap that reflects both the difficulty of reaching isolated communities and the lag in official verification.

Chocó’s geography makes every phase of disaster response extraordinarily slow. The department covers an area roughly the size of Switzerland, yet it has few paved roads connecting it to the national highway network. Towns and villages are linked primarily by rivers and dirt tracks, and much of the population is Indigenous or Afro-Colombian, living in settlements that may be reachable only by boat. During a visit to a large high school in Quibdó, she acknowledged the limits of any single intervention:

“There is not a way to alleviate the pain of so many, there are no magic solutions. But what there is, is commitment to be here alongside those from Chocó, to not abandon El Chocó like it historically has been abandoned, until every Colombian and every person from Chocó can return to their normal lives like they deserve and all the children can return to their schools and dream of the futures they deserve.”

She also told reporters she intended to devote her “personal efforts” to rebuilding a local technological university in the department, a project that would extend the foundation’s footprint well beyond primary and secondary education.

A Wave of Artist-Led Relief Across Latin America

Shakira’s announcement is the latest in a rapid sequence of high-profile commitments from Latin American entertainers responding to seismic disasters in Colombia and Venezuela. On Sunday, Marc Anthony and Chayanne headlined a Miami benefit concert and live fundraiser benefiting both countries’ earthquake relief.
