Four Teens Arrested in Connection with Fatal Stabbing of 16-Year-Old Boy

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the arrest of four teenagers following the death of a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed during an attack in Riseholme, near the Ortongate Shopping Centre in Peterborough. The incident occurred shortly before 7 PM BST on Sunday, when officers were called to the scene after reports of a teenager being assaulted. Initial investigations suggest the attack was targeted rather than random.

School Closure and Police Presence

The St John’s Church School in Peterborough temporarily shut its doors due to a “serious incident” nearby. In an email shared with the BBC, the school stated that police were conducting operations close to the premises, prompting the closure. An image captured the area on Sunday night, showing a substantial police force stationed near the shopping centre. A cordoned-off zone remains around the Ortongate Shopping Centre on Monday, with heightened patrols expected for several days.

Arrests and Charges

Two individuals from Peterborough, a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, have been taken into custody on murder charges. Additionally, two females, aged 16 and 17, were arrested for suspected assistance in the crime. The 16-year-old girl, hailing from March, also faces possession of a bladed object. All suspects are currently in police custody.

Det Ch Insp Richard Stott, representing the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit, remarked:

“This tragic event has resulted in the loss of a young man’s life, and we are maintaining communication with his family to provide updates. While the death will undoubtedly impact the local community, we believe the attack was not random and anticipate a continued police presence in the area.”

Current Status and Community Response

The Ortongate Shopping Centre remains operational, though its rear car park is closed. Residents have left flowers near the police cordon as a gesture of sympathy. The school has pledged to keep stakeholders informed about the situation and notify parents regarding potential reopening. Authorities are appealing for any information or CCTV footage from homes in the vicinity to aid their investigation.
