Savannah Guthrie says family is ‘in agony’ in first interview since her mother’s disappearance
Savannah Guthrie: Family in ‘Agony’ as Search for Missing Mother Continues
Savannah Guthrie, a co-host of TODAY, has shared updates about her mother’s disappearance, highlighting the emotional toll on her family over the past seven weeks. The search for Nancy Guthrie, 84, began after she was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1. Authorities indicated she had not attended a virtual church service at a friend’s house, prompting concern among her loved ones.
“Someone needs to do the right thing. We’re in unbearable agony, repeating the anguish night after night,” Guthrie told Hoda Kotb in an interview previewed Wednesday. The segment will air throughout the week, offering insight into her personal struggle.
The family’s distress has deepened as the investigation progresses. Nancy was last seen the night before her disappearance, around 9:45 p.m., after having dinner at her daughter Annie Guthrie’s home. “I imagine her terror in the darkness, and it’s unthinkable,” Guthrie reflected, emphasizing her resolve to keep searching.
Days after Nancy’s disappearance, Savannah and her siblings released a heartfelt Instagram video pleading for information. They expressed gratitude for public support, stating, “We feel them [prayers], and we continue to believe she feels them, too.” The siblings also conveyed their readiness to engage with the person responsible for their mother’s fate.
Law enforcement has enlisted both state and federal agencies in the effort, with the FBI spotlighting a male suspect described as 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, of average build. Surveillance footage from a doorbell camera shows a masked figure with an armed appearance tampering with the security system at Nancy’s home. The camera disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on February 1, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Forensic analysis revealed Guthrie’s blood on the porch of her residence. Investigators are now exploring genetic genealogy to trace unknown DNA found inside the house. The Guthrie family has offered a $1 million reward for Nancy’s safe return, while the FBI has pledged $50,000 for tips leading to her recovery or the arrest of those involved.
Guthrie, who has been on leave from the TODAY show, recently visited the New York City studio. She plans to resume her role, though her focus remains on supporting her family and aiding the search. “While she plans to return to the show on air, she remains focused right now supporting her family and working to help bring Nancy home,” said a TODAY spokesperson.
