Authorities in San Francisco apprehended a 20-year-old individual following an attack on the residence of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. The incident involved a Molotov cocktail being hurled at the property, igniting a perimeter gate. Police were called to the North Beach area early on Friday, though details about the suspect and the specific home affected remain undisclosed by the SFPD.

OpenAI, the prominent AI enterprise responsible for ChatGPT, confirmed the attack occurred at Altman’s primary residence. A spokesperson also noted that the same person had issued threats against the company’s headquarters in the city. “No injuries were reported during the incident,” the spokesperson stated, adding, “We deeply appreciate the swift response from SFPD and the city’s support in safeguarding our employees.”

“Thankfully, no one was hurt,” the spokeswoman said.

Although the suspect had already left the scene when officers arrived, they reappeared approximately an hour later near an OpenAI office, declaring intentions to “burn down the building.” The individual was subsequently taken into custody. An SFPD officer later mentioned that the status of the suspect’s arrest and potential charges were still under review, as the investigation is ongoing.

Altman, a billionaire with multiple properties, resides in San Francisco, where OpenAI was established and continues its operations. As a pivotal figure in AI development, he has gained global recognition through the company’s groundbreaking chatbot, ChatGPT, launched in late 2022. This release catalyzed widespread interest in AI innovations, fueling billions in investment annually.
