Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue
Authorities are searching for two individuals following an attempted arson at a synagogue in north London. The attack targeted the Finchley Reform Synagogue, with suspects hurling two bottles—believed to contain petrol—and a brick at the building. The Metropolitan Police has classified the incident as an antisemitic hate crime. The suspects, wearing balaclavas, approached the structure around 01:00 BST, though no damage or injuries were reported.
Context of Previous Attacks
A similar incident occurred last month when four ambulances linked to a Jewish community charity were set ablaze. Counter-terrorism units are assisting in both investigations, highlighting ongoing concerns about targeted violence against Jewish institutions. The Met emphasized the significance of the recent event, noting its connection to the earlier attack in Golders Green.
“The recent attempt to damage a local synagogue follows a pattern of troubling incidents targeting the Jewish community,” said Sarah Sackman, the Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green. “I refuse to allow this to become the new normal. British Jews must be free to go about their lives without fear—whether taking their children to nursery or attending synagogue. We do not want to live behind ever higher walls,” she added.
Community Response and Police Actions
The Community Security Trust (CST), a UK-based charity focused on monitoring antisemitism and providing security, is collaborating with law enforcement to support the affected synagogue. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams stated that the Met is aware of the community’s heightened concerns, particularly in light of the Golders Green arson attack. “We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously and detectives are working urgently to identify the suspects,” he said, urging the public to share CCTV or dash cam footage that could aid in the investigation.
