Trump warns that UK trade deal ‘can always be changed’

Trump Warns UK Trade Agreement ‘Can Always Be Revised’

US President Donald Trump expressed that the trade deal between America and the United Kingdom remains subject to adjustment, stating during a Sky News interview that the agreement was “favorable, surpassing what he had initially negotiated.” The remark came amid discussions about the long-standing alliance, which has seen recent tensions.

Starmer’s refusal to support the US-Israel campaign against Iran in February sparked ongoing criticism from Trump. The leader of the UK has been labeled by the president as “no Winston Churchill” in the past, highlighting dissatisfaction with his foreign policy approach. Despite this, Trump emphasized that the upcoming state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla would not be overshadowed by the current diplomatic friction.

“It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”

Trump’s remarks were prompted by a question about the nature of the transatlantic ties. When asked for a description, he initially responded with “With who?” before clarifying that he meant the UK. He reiterated that the relationship had “been better, but it’s sad,” while reiterating his belief in the trade deal’s quality.

In May of the previous year, the UK became the first nation to finalize a tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency. This deal reduced import duties on cars, aluminium, and steel. However, recent weeks have seen a shift in the dynamic between the leaders due to disagreements over Middle Eastern affairs.

Trump acknowledged liking Starmer but criticized his administration’s immigration and energy policies as “insane.” He also noted that the state visit would be a highlight, expressing anticipation for meeting the King. “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful,” he added, underscoring his personal rapport with the monarch.
