Gallego represented Arizona in the House of Representatives from 2015 through 2025 before moving to the Senate.

When questioned about the accuracy of the newspaper’s reporting, Gallego declined to comment extensively. “I’m not going to engage in gossip,” he told assembled journalists.

In her social media post, McClain, who holds the position of highest-ranking female Republican in the House, emphasized the importance of addressing power dynamics. “Even if a relationship is consensual, there is an inherent power imbalance that can undermine trust and create an appearance of impropriety. The goal should be protecting staff and maintaining confidence in the institution.”

Senate Ethics Committee Review

The Senate Ethics Committee recently concluded its examination of a formal complaint submitted by Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida. The complaint against Gallego included allegations of both sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations. In a letter dated June 26, the Committee communicated its findings to Gallego.

“Based on the investigation of the Committee, the Committee did not find evidence that your action violated Federal law, Senate Rules, or related standard of conduct,” the Committee wrote in a letter addressed to Gallego dated June 26.

Political figures from both major parties have faced accusations of inappropriate behavior throughout recent years, according to documentation maintained by the Ethics Committee.

Earlier this year, two former representatives departed Congress following misconduct allegations. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, and Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas, both resigned from their positions. Swalwell faced accusations of sexual assault, which he has consistently denied. Gonzales acknowledged having an affair with a staff member who subsequently died by suicide.

Representative Kat Cammack of Florida announced her intention to lead a bipartisan initiative aimed at improving how Congress addresses sexual misconduct allegations.
