Democratic Power Players Start Bipartisan Effort to Sabotage-Proof Elections

Democratic power players launch bipartisan effort – Democratic leaders have begun a collaborative initiative to strengthen election security ahead of the 2028 cycle, marking a strategic shift in their focus. The effort, led by the Democracy Defenders PAC, targets critical state-level positions that play a foundational role in ensuring electoral integrity. These roles—such as Attorneys General, Secretaries of State, and state Supreme Court justices—serve as gatekeepers for election procedures, legal challenges, and result certification. By addressing vulnerabilities at the state level, the group aims to counter growing threats from former President Donald Trump and his allies, who have persistently sought to erode public confidence in electoral systems through litigation and unsubstantiated claims of fraud.

State-Level Races as Democratic Priority

Previously aligned with the Harris campaign to support legal frameworks, Democracy Defenders has pivoted to prioritize state office races. The organization plans to invest between $10 and $15 million to fortify democratic institutions, particularly in battleground states where control of electoral mechanisms is fiercely contested. Key members, including Ben Wikler, a former Wisconsin Democratic Party chair, emphasize that securing pro-democracy leaders in these roles is essential to “sabotage-proof” the electoral process. This strategy targets positions that can swiftly resolve disputes and uphold fair voting standards, areas often neglected in national political narratives.

Bipartisan Strategy to Counter Electoral Threats

With Trump’s post-2020 challenges, the Democratic coalition has adopted a more proactive stance. His administration’s seizure of Georgia’s Fulton County election records in January, coupled with recent accusations of rigging a Virginia special election, has intensified the need for state-level safeguards. By funding campaigns for state officials, Democracy Defenders hopes to preemptively secure leaders who can resist efforts to manipulate election outcomes. This approach underscores a broader goal: to nationalize control of electoral systems through a mix of partisan and bipartisan support, ensuring a unified defense against potential disruptions.

Jim Messina, a seasoned Democratic strategist and advisor to the PAC, highlights the underfunded nature of these races. “State positions are the backbone of elections, yet they’re frequently overlooked,” he explained. The group’s investments in races like Wisconsin’s Supreme Court contest, where Elon Musk’s $20 million contribution was a notable factor, demonstrate the high stakes involved. While candidates such as Jen Jordan and Miracle Rankin lost their bids, the close margin in Rankin’s race illustrates how pivotal these roles are in shaping electoral outcomes. Democracy Defenders’ strategy hinges on making these positions competitive and secure for the long term.

Leadership and Strategic Partnerships

The Democracy Defenders PAC operates under a diverse advisory board, blending Democratic and Republican perspectives to foster collaboration. Notable members include Barbara Comstock, a former Republican representative, and Tom Perez, a former Secretary of Labor, alongside Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers. TJ Ducklo, who previously managed campaigns for President Joe Biden, leads day-to-day operations. This mix of backgrounds signals a commitment to nonpartisan election defense, with a shared objective of reinforcing institutional resilience against partisan sabotage.

Despite the challenges, the effort has already seen progress in several states. Democracy Defenders’ investments in Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, and North Carolina highlight a targeted strategy to build a strong foundation for future electoral security. By ensuring that state officials are prepared to uphold democratic processes, the coalition aims to create a robust network of defenders capable of withstanding aggressive challenges. As voting laws continue to evolve, the group’s focus on state-level races underscores the importance of local leadership in safeguarding the integrity of the broader electoral system.
