Why has the US targeted Iran’s Kharg Island?
US President Donald Trump announced that military forces had launched an attack on Kharg Island, a small, rocky landmass situated just 15 nautical miles from Iran’s coastline. The island hosts a critical oil terminal, often regarded as Iran’s economic backbone. While Trump claimed the strike “totally obliterated” military targets, he emphasized that the oil infrastructure remained untouched.
Kharg Island, though compact, plays a pivotal role in Iran’s energy network. Nearly 90% of the country’s crude oil passes through its terminal, transported via pipelines from the mainland. Massive tankers, capable of holding up to 85 million gallons, dock at the island’s extended jetties to load oil. Its coastal position allows access to deep waters, unlike the shallower mainland areas.
Strategic Importance and Immediate Impact
After the strikes, Iranian military officials warned that any attack on the island’s oil facilities would trigger swift retaliation. They stated that infrastructure owned by US-linked firms would be “immediately destroyed and turned into a pile of ashes” if targeted. Despite this, reports indicated no casualties among military personnel, oil workers, or island residents, with oil exports continuing unimpeded.
“He’s showing it as being merciful but saying he could be more punishing to the IRGC” by targeting the oil facilities, said Justin Crump, a military analyst and former British Army officer.
Crump, who leads intelligence consultancy Sibylline, noted the strategic intent behind the bombing. The action was designed to deter Iran from escalating the conflict further. Trump had previously framed the war as a means to inspire Iranian citizens to overthrow the regime, though his current focus seems to revolve around disrupting energy infrastructure.
Kharg Island’s destruction would cripple Iran’s economy and intensify regional tensions. It could also push global oil prices upward, prompting Iran to retaliate by targeting oil sites across the Middle East. The island’s location near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, adds to its significance. The US aimed to ensure the safe passage of vessels through this corridor, a priority highlighted by Trump’s warning to strike again if Iran interferes.
Targeting the Economic Lifeline
US Central Command confirmed the attack, stating over 90 military targets were hit, including naval mine storage, missile bunkers, and other defense sites. However, the oil infrastructure remained protected. The move underscores the US’s focus on Iran’s economic vulnerabilities, with Kharg serving as a key asset for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran’s military, through state media, claimed no damage was done to its oil facilities. This contrasts with the US’s broader aim to send a message. The strike could force Iran to reassess its tactics, potentially expanding its targets beyond oil terminals to include essential infrastructure like water desalination plants.
